Weather Pro manufactures vinyl specialty shape windows in Canada and installs them with our own crews. Specialty shape windows are arches, circles, trapezoids and custom shapes built for feature openings, in the same heavy vinyl construction as the rest of our windows. Each unit is built to the measured opening rather than to a stock size, with double- or triple-pane glass and a full colour range inside and out. Every window is ENERGY STAR certified and covered by a transferable lifetime warranty.
What is a specialty shape window
A specialty shape window is any window that is not a rectangle: a half round over a door, a circle top on a picture window, a trapezoid under a cathedral ceiling, an octagon in a gable. It is built for a feature opening where the shape of the wall or the roofline sets the shape of the glass.
Every specialty shape is custom made to the measured opening, in the same heavy vinyl wall construction as all our windows, with the same glass packages and colour range. Grid patterns and special glass options turn a standard opening into an architectural feature without the maintenance of true divided lites.
Specialty shapes are usually combined with standard windows: an arch above a casement or picture window, a trapezoid beside a fixed unit, a circle on its own in a stairwell or a gable.
Specialty shapes we build
The common shapes are listed below. Because each unit is drawn for a specific opening, a shape that is not listed can usually be built as well.
Half rounds and circle tops
An arch over a door or a picture window, either as a separate unit above or combined with the window below into one frame.
Eyebrow and quarter rounds
A low, wide arch above a wide opening, or a quarter circle beside a rectangular unit where the roofline slopes.
Trapezoids and cathedral shapes
Angled tops that follow a sloped ceiling or a gable, usually above a row of standard windows in a great room.
Octagons and circles
Stand-alone feature windows for stairwells, gables, bathrooms and entries.
Specialty shape window sizes
There is no standard specialty shape size. Every unit is manufactured to the measured opening, and the shape is drawn from the opening itself: the radius of an arch or the angle of a trapezoid is taken on site.
Because each unit is drawn for a specific opening, specialty shape windows are priced per configuration rather than per opening. Our estimator confirms the shape and the size on site.
Why specialty shape windows suit the Canadian climate
Most specialty shapes are fixed units, so there is no seal between sash and frame to age or leak. The glass unit sits in a single fixed frame of the same heavy vinyl wall construction as all our windows.
Every window we build is a vinyl window manufactured in Canada, with a multi-chamber profile that adds insulating air pockets within the frame. Vinyl does not rot, does not need painting, and conducts far less heat than an aluminum frame through a Canadian winter.
Glass packages are double-pane with a low-e coating and argon fill as standard, or triple-pane with a third pane and a second sealed cavity for lower heat loss and reduced outside noise. Both are available ENERGY STAR certified for the climate zone the window is sold into.
Specialty shape window installation
Specialty shape window installation is measured, manufactured and fitted by Weather Pro crews rather than subcontracted trades. Two things get decided during the measurement, and all of them are easier to change before manufacture than after.
Retrofit or full frame
A retrofit keeps the existing sound frame. A full-frame replacement goes back to the rough opening and is required when the frame has rot or the opening has shifted.
Grids and glass
Whether the shape carries a grid pattern and which glass option it uses. Grids give the look of divided lites without the maintenance, and both are set before manufacture.
Most replacement projects are completed in a single day, and the transferable lifetime warranty is active from the day of installation.
Colours and finishes
White is the standard finish. Exterior colours and laminate finishes are available across the full range, and the interior can be finished differently from the exterior where the room calls for it.
The colour either runs through the vinyl profile or is applied as an exterior laminate, so it is not paint sitting on a surface. That means no repainting, no flaking and no chalky finish after a few Canadian winters.
A few things worth knowing before you choose:
- Most homeowners match the exterior to the soffit or the trim rather than the siding, since the frame reads as trim from the street.
- A white interior with a coloured exterior is the most common combination.
- Woodgrain interior laminates suit rooms that already have stained trim.
- Darker laminates absorb more solar heat, which matters on large south and west facing units.
