Weather Pro manufactures vinyl single slider windows in Canada and installs them with our own crews. A single slider opens horizontally with one moving sash, needs no clearance outside the wall, and is one of the most economical operating styles we build. Each unit is built to the measured opening rather than to a stock size, with double- or triple-pane glass and a full colour range inside and out. Every window is ENERGY STAR certified and covered by a transferable lifetime warranty.
What is a single slider window
A single slider window has two sashes side by side in one frame. One sash slides horizontally along a track and the other is fixed. Nothing projects beyond the wall when the window is open, so it works over walkways, decks and narrow side yards.
The operating sash tilts in, so the outside of the glass is cleaned from inside the room. The fixed sash keeps the frame simple and rigid, which is why single sliders, along with single hung windows, are the most economical operating style we build.
A slider opens to at most half the frame width, and it seals by contact in its track rather than by compression like a casement. That makes it the practical choice for bedrooms and secondary openings, and for openings where a swinging sash would be in the way.
Where single slider windows work best
The horizontal opening and the low cost make single sliders the usual choice for three kinds of openings.
Bedrooms and secondary openings
Rooms that need a window that opens easily and cleans from inside, at the lowest cost of any operating style.
Where nothing can swing out
Over walkways, decks and narrow side yards, where a casement or awning sash would project into the way.
Wide, low openings
Sliders are wider than they are tall, so they use a wide opening well and match the look of hung windows on the same house.
Single slider window sizes
There is no standard single slider window size in Canadian replacement work. Every unit is manufactured to the measured opening, because openings in existing homes are rarely square and almost never identical. What does exist is a set of common size bands, and knowing which band your opening falls into is enough to plan a project.
| Band | Approximate opening |
|---|---|
| Small | up to 24 by 36 inches |
| Medium | up to 36 by 60 inches |
| Large | over 36 by 60 inches |
Sliders are wider than they are tall, so the bands are read by width as much as by height. For wide openings we build a double slider or an end vent slider rather than a single oversized sash. Our estimator confirms the configuration on site.
Why single slider windows suit the Canadian climate
Every window we build is a vinyl window manufactured in Canada, with a multi-chamber profile that adds insulating air pockets within the frame. Vinyl does not rot, does not need painting, and conducts far less heat than an aluminum frame through a Canadian winter.
Glass packages are double-pane with a low-e coating and argon fill as standard, or triple-pane with a third pane and a second sealed cavity for lower heat loss and reduced outside noise. Both are available ENERGY STAR certified for the climate zone the window is sold into.
Single slider window installation
Single slider window installation is measured, manufactured and fitted by Weather Pro crews rather than subcontracted trades. Two things get decided during the measurement, and all of them are easier to change before manufacture than after.
Retrofit or full frame
A retrofit keeps the existing sound frame. A full-frame replacement goes back to the rough opening and is required when the frame has rot or the opening has shifted.
Single or double
Whether one sash or both should slide. The step up to a double slider is modest in small and medium sizes and gives ventilation from both sides of the opening.
Most replacement projects are completed in a single day, and the transferable lifetime warranty is active from the day of installation.
Colours and finishes
White is the standard finish. Exterior colours and laminate finishes are available across the full range, and the interior can be finished differently from the exterior where the room calls for it.
The colour either runs through the vinyl profile or is applied as an exterior laminate, so it is not paint sitting on a surface. That means no repainting, no flaking and no chalky finish after a few Canadian winters.
A few things worth knowing before you choose:
- Most homeowners match the exterior to the soffit or the trim rather than the siding, since the frame reads as trim from the street.
- A white interior with a coloured exterior is the most common combination.
- Woodgrain interior laminates suit rooms that already have stained trim.
- Darker laminates absorb more solar heat, which matters on large south and west facing units.
